Team UCSF Pepper Finished as Top 3 in the VHA Innovation Ecosystem and precisionFDA COVID-19 Risk Factor Modeling Challenge

From June 2 to July 3, 2020, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Innovation Ecosystem and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) COVID-19 Risk Factor Modeling Challenge called on the community to develop and evaluate computational models to predict COVID-19 related health outcomes in Veterans.

Our Developmental Project Scholars, consisting of Bocheng Jing, Dr. Sun Jeon, and Grisell Diaz-Ramirez, teamed up with our Pepper Data Analysis Co-Core leader, Dr. John Boscardin, and our Pepper Pilot and Exploratory Studies Co-Core leader, Dr. Sei Lee, to participate in this challenge as UCSF Pepper. Out of a total of 34 submissions and 21 teams, UCSF Pepper won the bronze badge for top-performing submissions within individual metrics. Congratulations on their achievement!

For next steps, as top performers, the models will be used to generate predictions on real veteran health data to understand if performance is maintained from models trained on synthetic data.
